Condo insurance vs. your HOA master policy
Most condo associations carry a master policy, but it rarely covers everything. Knowing what it includes helps you choose the right condo (HO-6) coverage, without paying for overlap or leaving gaps.
Usually covered by the HOA master policy
- The building's shared structure, like the roof and exterior walls
- Common areas such as hallways, lobbies and grounds
- The association's liability for shared spaces
Usually covered by your condo policy
- Your unit's interior, like walls, floors, cabinets and fixtures (depending on your HOA)
- Your personal belongings
- Your personal liability
- Your share of an HOA loss assessment
What a condo policy can help protect
Your unit
Helps repair or rebuild the parts of your unit you're responsible for after a covered loss, like a fire or a burst pipe.
Your belongings
Personal property coverage helps replace furniture, electronics, clothes and more, at home or on the go.
Your liability
Can help if someone is hurt in your unit or you accidentally damage a neighbor's unit and you're found responsible.
Loss assessment
Helps pay your share when the HOA assesses owners for a covered loss to shared property that its policy doesn't fully cover.
Additional living expenses
Can help with costs like a hotel if a covered loss makes your condo unlivable while it's repaired.
Bundle with auto
Insure your condo and car with Allstate and you may qualify for a multi-policy discount, with one local agent for both.

Condo insurance FAQ
What does condo insurance (HO-6) cover?
A condo policy, often called HO-6, can help cover the inside of your unit that you own, such as walls, floors, cabinets and fixtures, depending on your HOA's rules. It also helps cover your personal belongings and includes personal liability coverage. We'll walk through what applies to your unit.
Doesn't my HOA's master policy already cover my condo?
The HOA master policy usually covers the building's shared structure and common areas, like the roof, hallways and grounds. It usually does not cover your belongings or your personal liability, and depending on the type of master policy, it may not cover the interior of your unit. Ask your HOA for a copy of the master policy and we'll help you compare it with your condo coverage.
What is loss assessment coverage?
If your association has a covered loss to a shared area and the cost is more than its master policy pays, the HOA may split the difference among owners. Loss assessment coverage on your condo policy can help pay your share, up to your limit.
Does condo insurance cover water damage?
Many condo policies can help with sudden and accidental water damage, like a burst pipe. Flood damage is usually not covered and needs a separate flood policy. We'll go over what your policy covers and what it doesn't.
Can I bundle condo and auto insurance?
Yes. When you insure your condo and car with Allstate, you may qualify for a multi-policy discount, and you have one local agent for both policies.
