Overland Park is the largest city in Johnson County and the second-largest city in Kansas, with 197,238 residents in the 2020 Census. Our offices are on the Missouri side of the metro, in Gladstone and North Kansas City, but our agents are licensed in Kansas, so we can help with Kansas auto, home, renters and life coverage. The drive from Gladstone is about 23 to 25 miles, usually 30 to 45 minutes, and most Overland Park customers handle everything by phone, email or online.

A City That Grew Up Fast

William B. Strang Jr. began laying out subdivisions along an old military road in 1905, and Overland Park incorporated in 1960 with about 28,000 people. It passed Kansas City, Kansas, in the early 2000s to become the state’s second-largest city. You can still see the early town in Historic Downtown Overland Park, with its farmers’ market and clock tower plaza. Oak Park Mall, the 300-acre Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens and the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead draw visitors from all over the metro.

I-435 crosses the middle of the city, U.S. 69 runs north to south, and I-35 runs along the northwest edge. Very roughly, the Shawnee Mission School District covers the city north of I-435, and Blue Valley covers most of the area south of it.

Kansas Car Insurance Works Differently

If you’ve moved over from Missouri, the biggest change is personal injury protection (PIP). Kansas uses a no-fault system for injuries, so your PIP coverage pays first for your own medical expenses after a crash, no matter who caused it. According to the Kansas Insurance Department, every Kansas auto policy must include at least:

  • Liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 for property damage
  • PIP: $4,500 per person for medical expenses, $900 a month for one year for disability or lost income, $25 a day for substitution benefits, $2,000 for funeral expenses and $4,500 for rehabilitation
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident

Protecting an Overland Park Home

  • Hail and wind. Roofs take a beating from spring storms across Johnson County. We’ll go over your roof coverage and how your wind and hail deductible works.
  • Creeks and flash flooding. Indian Creek, Tomahawk Creek and other Blue River tributaries run through the city. Standard homeowners policies generally don’t cover flood damage, so ask us about separate flood coverage if you live near a creek.
  • Apartments and townhomes. Overland Park has a lot of rental housing. Renters insurance helps protect your belongings and includes personal liability coverage.
  • Life across the state line. Plenty of Overland Park residents work in Missouri, or own property on both sides. Because we’re licensed in both states, one agency can help with all of it.
