Missouri Auto Insurance Rules
Missouri law sets the minimum auto liability limits in RSMo 303.190 and requires uninsured motorist coverage in RSMo 379.203. According to the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR), every vehicle you own or drive needs at least:
- $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury liability
- $25,000 per accident for property damage liability
- Uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
You have to keep proof of insurance in the vehicle at all times. DOR says that if you’re convicted of failing to show proof, four points go on your driving record, and eight points within 18 months can cost you your driving privilege. Insurance companies report the vehicles they insure to the state’s electronic verification system (MOIVS), and DOR can ask you for proof of insurance at any time.
If you’ve been told you need an SR-22, our Missouri SR-22 guide explains how long you’ll need it. For a full rundown of the rules, see our Missouri car insurance requirements FAQ, and read our blog post on whether the minimums are enough.
What Car Insurance Costs in Missouri
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Missouri’s average auto insurance expenditure in 2023 was $1,154.78 per insured vehicle, compared with $1,281.92 for the U.S. as a whole. That’s an average across every driver and coverage mix, not a quote. Our Missouri car insurance cost guide explains what drives your own price.
Missouri Weather and Your Home
Missouri gets its share of hail, high winds and tornadoes. According to the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI), most standard homeowners policies cover damage from fire, lightning, wind and hail, but flood and earthquake damage usually aren’t covered and must be bought separately. DCI also reminds homeowners that deductibles can change at renewal and that some policies have separate deductibles for different types of loss. Our hail and wind deductible guide walks through how that works.
If you’re bundling home and auto, we can review both policies together.
