Platte City is the county seat of Platte County, just north of Kansas City International Airport along Interstate 29 and Highway 92. From our main office in Gladstone it’s about 19 miles, usually a 25- to 35-minute drive by way of I-29. Our NKC office in North Kansas City is close to the I-29 corridor too.
A County Seat Built at the Falls of the Platte
In 1838, Zadock Martin and his sons built a dam and a grist mill at the Falls of the Platte River. After the Platte County Court chose the site as the county seat in December 1839, the nearby village of Martinsville moved to the new town, and Platte City was incorporated in 1843. Union troops burned the town in December 1861, including the courthouse, which was rebuilt in 1867.
The town has grown a lot in recent decades. According to the city, its population rose from 2,940 in 1990 to 4,691 in 2010. That growth shows in the housing, which ranges from older homes near Main Street to newer neighborhoods on the edges of town, with farms and acreages across the rest of Platte County.
Insurance Questions We Hear From Platte City
- Living near the river. The Platte River runs right past town. A standard homeowners or renters policy typically does not cover flood damage, according to the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance. Flood insurance is a separate policy, and DCI notes a new flood policy can take 30 days to take effect, so it’s worth asking about before storm season, not during it.
- Airport and I-29 commuting. Many Platte City residents work at or around KCI or drive I-29 into Kansas City every day. More highway miles mean it’s worth looking at liability limits above the state minimum, along with optional coverages like rental reimbursement and roadside assistance.
- Older homes. Older homes can cost more to repair or rebuild with today’s materials and building codes. We’ll go over how your dwelling coverage is set and what your policy does and doesn’t include.
- Acreage and outbuildings. If you live outside city limits, tell us about detached garages, shops, barns and how you use the land. That way we can tell you what an Allstate homeowners policy covers and what it doesn’t.
- Rental property. If you own a house or duplex that you rent out, it needs landlord coverage, not a regular homeowners policy. See our landlord insurance options.
