Olathe is the county seat of Johnson County and the fourth-largest city in Kansas. The 2020 Census counted 141,290 residents, more than double the 63,440 counted in 1990. We’re Kansas-licensed Allstate agents based on the Missouri side of the metro. Our Gladstone office is about 31 miles away, usually a 40- to 50-minute drive, so most Olathe customers work with us by phone, email or online.

From Trail Stop to Growing Suburb

John T. Barton founded Olathe in 1857, and it became the county seat in 1859. Local tradition says the name comes from a Shawnee word for “beautiful.” The town was a stop on the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails, and the Mahaffie Stagecoach Shop and Farm, a historic site run by the City of Olathe, still offers stagecoach rides and living-history events. When Interstate 35 linked Olathe to Kansas City, decades of residential growth followed.

Today Olathe is home to Garmin, the city’s largest employer according to Olathe’s 2022 financial report, along with MidAmerica Nazarene University, the Kansas School for the Deaf (founded in 1861) and Johnson County Executive Airport. Lake Olathe and Cedar Lake give residents places to get outdoors close to home.

Insurance for Olathe Households

  • Families with kids and new drivers. According to the 2020 Census, about 40% of Olathe households have children under 18. When a teenager starts driving, it’s a good time to review liability limits and ask which Allstate discounts you may qualify for.
  • Newer homes. A lot of Olathe’s housing was built during its big growth years. Make sure your dwelling coverage keeps up with what it would cost to rebuild today, and know how your roof and your wind and hail deductible are handled.
  • Spring storms. Hail, high winds and tornado warnings are a regular part of spring and summer in Johnson County. Standard homeowners policies generally don’t cover flood, so ask about separate flood coverage if you’re near a creek or a low-lying area.
  • I-35 commuters. Many Olathe residents drive I-35 to Lenexa, Overland Park or Kansas City, Missouri. If you work or park on the Missouri side, it helps to have agents licensed in both states.
  • Boats, motorcycles and toys. We also offer Allstate boat and motorcycle insurance.

Kansas Auto Requirements in Brief

Every Kansas auto policy must include 25/50/25 liability, personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, according to the Kansas Insurance Department. PIP pays first for your own injury-related expenses after a crash, regardless of fault.
