Kansas Auto Insurance Requirements

Kansas law (K.S.A. 40-3107) sets minimum liability limits, and the Kansas Insurance Department says every personal auto policy sold in the state must include:

  • Liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 per accident for property damage
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): $4,500 per person for medical expenses, $900 a month for one year for disability or lost income, $25 a day for substitution benefits, $2,000 for funeral, burial or cremation expenses, and $4,500 for rehabilitation
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury

Kansas uses a no-fault system for injuries, which means your own PIP coverage pays first for your medical expenses after a crash, regardless of who caused it. Under K.S.A. 40-284, uninsured motorist coverage generally carries the same limits as your bodily injury liability coverage. The Kansas Insurance Department recommends buying coverage that fits your needs, not just the minimum. Our blog post on Kansas auto insurance requirements goes into more detail.

SR-22 Filings in Kansas

The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) requires an SR-22, proof of liability insurance filed by your insurance company, after certain violations. Its schedule of imposed actions lists a full year of SR-22 for leaving the scene of a non-injury accident and for a conviction for driving without insurance. If KDOR doesn’t receive the SR-22 within 30 days of the requirement, the suspension takes effect. KDOR also says not to get the SR-22 until you’re notified that you need one, because filings received before the notice don’t count. We do SR-22 filings, so call us once you have your KDOR notice. Missouri’s rules are different. See our Missouri SR-22 guide.

What Car Insurance Costs in Kansas

According to NAIC data, the average auto insurance expenditure in Kansas was $972.57 per insured vehicle in 2023, below the national average of $1,281.92. Your price depends on your driving record, vehicle, location, coverage and other factors, so the only way to know is a quote.

Protecting a Kansas Home

Spring and summer storms bring hail, damaging winds and tornadoes across Kansas. Review your roof coverage, your deductibles and whether you’d want separate flood coverage, since standard homeowners policies generally don’t cover flood.
