SR-22 Insurance in Missouri: How Long You Need It

If the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) has told you that you need an SR-22, you probably have questions. Here’s what it is, how long you’ll need it and how we can help. The rules below come from DOR. Always follow the specific instructions in your DOR notice.

What is an SR-22?

DOR describes an SR-22 as an insurance filing from your insurance company that shows your motor vehicle has liability insurance. It isn’t a separate type of insurance. It’s a certificate your insurer files with the state to prove you’re carrying the required coverage. People often call it “SR-22 insurance,” but what you actually buy is a regular auto liability policy with an SR-22 filing attached.

Who needs an SR-22 in Missouri?

DOR may require one to reinstate your driving privilege after:

  • A points suspension or revocation for moving violations, such as speeding, running a stop sign or careless driving
  • An alcohol-related administrative suspension or revocation (DOR says it isn’t required for minors suspended for the first time for testing .02% or more)
  • A suspension for no insurance that involved an accident
  • A suspension for an unpaid motor vehicle accident judgment

How long do I need an SR-22 in Missouri?

It depends on why you were suspended:

  • Two years from the starting date of the suspension or revocation for points, alcohol-related suspensions and accident-judgment suspensions
  • Three years from the date you were eligible to reinstate for mandatory-insurance (no insurance) or false-insurance suspensions

These periods come from DOR. Your notice will tell you which applies to you.

What happens if my SR-22 lapses?

If you don’t keep proof of insurance on file for the full period, DOR says your driver license and/or plates will be suspended again. That’s why it’s so important to keep the policy active. Setting up automatic payments is an easy way to avoid a lapse.

Can I just send DOR my insurance card instead?

Only in limited cases. DOR says your insurance card is enough only for mandatory-insurance suspensions that don’t involve an accident. If an accident was involved, or for the other suspension types above, the proof is usually an SR-22 filing.

What else do I need to reinstate my license?

For a points suspension, DOR lists a $20 reinstatement fee and the SR-22. After a revocation, meaning a loss of your driving privilege for a year or more, you’ll also need to retake the complete driver exam. Other suspension types have their own fees and steps, which are listed on your notice and on DOR’s reinstatement page.

What if my license was suspended in Kansas or Iowa?

Each state sets its own rules. The Kansas Department of Revenue requires a full year of SR-22 for some violations, and the Iowa DOT generally requires proof for two years. See our Kansas and Iowa pages, and follow the instructions from the state that suspended your license.

How much does SR-22 insurance cost?

We don’t publish prices. What you pay is based on the auto policy itself, and the violation that led to the SR-22 is part of your driving record, which affects your rate. Read what affects car insurance rates in Missouri for the factors DCI lists.

How can your office help?

We do SR-22 filings. Call us and we’ll look at your situation, quote an Allstate auto policy with the SR-22 filing you need, and explain the coverage. Make sure your policy meets Missouri’s minimums (see our Missouri requirements FAQ), then keep it active for the full period.
