Kearney sits in northern Clay County, about 15 miles northeast of downtown Kansas City. Interstate 35 runs along the west side of town, Highway 33 runs north to south and Highway 92 runs east to west through the middle of it. Our main office in Gladstone is about 19 miles away, usually a 25- to 35-minute drive depending on traffic, and our NKC office in North Kansas City is a few minutes farther south.

Deep Roots and a Lot of New Rooftops

Kearney’s story starts with two villages. Centerville was laid out in 1856, and Kearney was platted in 1867 along the new Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. The two grew together after Kearney incorporated in 1869. The town is best known as the birthplace of Frank and Jesse James, and the Jesse James Birthplace and Museum on James Farm Road still draws visitors from around the world. Watkins Mill State Park, which preserves a historic woolen mill, is a short drive east.

Today Kearney is one of the faster-growing towns in the Northland. The 2020 Census counted 10,404 residents, and new subdivisions now stand on former farmsteads and feedlots. The Kearney School District is a big reason many young families choose to live here.

What That Means for Your Insurance

  • Newer homes. If you bought in a newer subdivision, check that your dwelling coverage reflects what it would cost to rebuild your house today, not just what you paid for it. We can go over replacement cost, roof coverage and how your wind and hail deductible works. Our guide to hail and wind deductibles explains the basics.
  • Older homes and acreage. Homes near the original downtown and on rural lots around Kearney often have detached garages, shops or barns. Ask us how those structures are covered and whether your liability limits fit a bigger property.
  • Storm season. Spring storms are part of life in Clay County. The city’s own history notes a 1900 tornado that damaged Kearney’s First Baptist Church. According to the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI), most standard homeowners policies cover wind and hail, but flood and earthquake damage usually aren’t covered and have to be bought separately.
  • Commuting. Many Kearney drivers take I-35 to Liberty, North Kansas City or downtown every day, while others spend a lot of time on two-lane county roads. Comprehensive coverage helps with things like hail damage and hitting a deer, and collision coverage helps repair your car after a crash, subject to your deductible.
  • Teen drivers. Adding a new driver is one of the biggest changes to a household’s auto policy. Allstate may offer discounts, such as for good grades, and we’ll tell you which ones you may qualify for.
