Bundling means buying more than one policy, such as home and auto, from the same insurance company. It’s one of the most common questions we get. Here are straight answers, including what bundling does and doesn’t change. For a longer read, see our blog post, How Bundling Home and Auto Insurance Can Save Money in Missouri and Kansas.
What does bundling home and auto insurance mean?
You keep a separate home policy and a separate auto policy, but both come from the same insurer. Many insurers give a multi-policy discount when you do this. The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) lists “buying home and auto insurance from the same company” among the discounts to ask your agent about.
Does bundling always save money?
Not always, and anyone who promises you a specific savings number without quoting you isn’t giving you the full picture. Discounts vary by company, state, the policies you combine and your situation. DCI also cautions that a discount alone doesn’t mean a rate is a good one, since a company’s price without a discount can sometimes be lower than another company’s price with one. The fair way to decide is to compare the total bundled price and coverage with what you pay now.
Will bundling change my coverage?
No. Each policy keeps its own coverage, limits and deductibles. Your home policy still has its own wind and hail deductible, and your auto policy still has its own collision and comprehensive deductibles. A claim on one policy is handled under that policy. It’s still a good time to review both, because you may find gaps or overlap.
What can I bundle besides a house and a car?
Through our office, you can talk to us about Allstate auto, home, renters, landlord, life, boat and motorcycle insurance. If you rent, you may be able to bundle renters and auto coverage. Ask us which combinations are available for your situation and state.
Are there benefits besides price?
For many families, the bigger benefit is simplicity: one agent who knows both policies, one place to call with questions and one review each year. It also makes it easier to keep your liability limits consistent across your home and car, which matters if you’re ever sued after an accident.
What happens to my discount if I cancel one of the policies?
A multi-policy discount generally depends on keeping the policies together, so canceling or moving one may remove the discount from the other, which can change your price. Ask us before making changes so there are no surprises.
What if my home is in Kansas and I work in Missouri?
That’s common in the Kansas City area. Policies follow the rules of the state where the home is located or the car is garaged. Our agents are licensed in Missouri and Kansas, and our North Kansas City office is also licensed in Iowa, so we can look at your whole picture and tell you what’s available. See our Missouri, Kansas and Iowa pages.
What do I need for a bundled quote?
It helps to have:
- The declarations pages from your current home and auto policies
- Driver’s license numbers and birth dates for everyone in the household who drives
- Vehicle year, make, model and VIN
- Your home’s address, year built, approximate square footage and roof age
- Any claims in the last few years
